Mitomycin(MMC) is commonly used adjunctively in trabeculectomy surgery. However, it increases the incidence of the postoperative hypotony, Intraocular pressures were evaluated 1day, 2weeks, 4weeks, 6weeks and 8weeks after the application of
0.2mg/ml and
0.5gm/ml MMC on the sclera in the rabbit eyes. Mean prepoerative intraocular pressure were 10.0mmHg in the 0.2 mg/ml MMC group and 9.75mmHg in the 0.5mg/ml MMC group. On the 1st postoperative day, the mean intraocular pressure were 4.5mmHg in the
0.2mg/ml MMC group and 5.75mmHg in the 0.5mg/ml MMC group. The mean intraocular pressures were 5.0mmHg, 6.5mmHg, 8.5mmHg, and 10.0mmHg on the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th postoperative weeks in the 0.2mg/ml MMC group respectively. In the 0.5mg/ml MMC
group,
the mean intraocular pressure were 6.5mmHg, 7.25mmHg, 9.25mmHg and 9.5mmHg on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th postoperative week respectively.
The above result suggest that episcleral application of MMC may decrease the intraocular pressure.
